This guide explores the passphrase feature: what it does, why advanced users rely on it, how to create recoverable yet secure passphrases, and the dangers of mismanaging them.

What is a passphrase?

Technically it's an extra word or phrase appended to your seed that produces a different wallet. Without the passphrase the wallet cannot be restored. This makes it suitable for creating hidden or additional accounts that are protected even if your seed is exposed.

Use-cases

Warning: If you forget the passphrase, there is no recovery. Treat it like an extra key — store securely and separately from the seed.

Designing a recoverable passphrase

Use a memorable pattern you can reliably reproduce, or use a passphrase stored in a physical secure location. Avoid relying on ephemeral memory alone when large sums are at risk. Consider storing a hint in a separate secure place rather than the passphrase itself.

Recovery & testing

Test the passphrase by restoring to a different device (or a software wallet with correct import features) and confirm the expected wallet appears. Do this with small amounts to validate your operational plan.
